Driving Abroad 



Motoring regulations differ from country to country, so it’s important to know the local driving rules before you go - to avoid being caught out.

Basic requirements

Below is a list of the basic requirements for driving abroad, failure to meet these may result in a fine or even arrest.
  • A full and valid drivers license.
  • An international drivers permit where necessary.
  • Motor insurance certificate.
  • Valid passport.
  • GB sticker
Please also be aware that some countries have their own specific requirements, which should be researched before travel.

Drink driving as well as talking on a mobile phone while driving is prohibited in most countries. Even if it is not prohibited for the sake of safety it is advisable to do neither.

Netherlands

  • Warning triangle recommended (compulsory in accident/breakdown situation).
  • Speed limits
  • Built-up areas: 50km/h.
  • Outside built-up areas: 80km/h or 100km/h.
  • Motorways: 120km/h.
  • Other
  • On the spot fines apply.
  • Alcohol limit: 50mg per 100ml of blood (lower for new drivers).

Denmark

  • Accessories
  • Warning triangle
  • First aid kit (recommended)
  • Fire extinguisher (recommended)
  • Speed limits
  • Built-up areas: 50km/h
  • Outside built-up areas: 80-90km/h
  • Motorways: 110-130km/h
  • Other
  • On-the-spot fines apply
  • Dipped headlights are compulsory during the day
  • Alcohol limit: 50mg per 100ml of blood.

France

  • Built-up areas: 50km/h
  • Outside built-up areas: 90km/h. (80 when wet)
  • Motorways: 130km/h
  • Other

Germany

  • Outside built-up areas: 100km/h
  • Motorways: recommended maximum of 130km/h; many also have posted speed limits
  • Speed limits differ in bad weather
  • Alcohol limit: 50mg per 100ml of blood

Norway
